Naira abuse in Nigeria has become a serious offence, especially in recent years with the rise of social media and public displays of wealth.
Many ordinary citizens and celebrities have found themselves in legal trouble for Naira Abuse
These includes spraying Naira notes, stepping on them, mutilating, tearing, or throwing them around at parties and events.
These acts are criminalised under the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, which the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is now strictly enforcing.
A number of high-profile cases have emerged.
This draws national attention to the consequences of abusing the country’s currency.
Celebrities Who Have Faced Legal Consequences for Naira Abuse
Bobrisky
One of the most talked-about cases is that of Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, who was sentenced to six months in prison in April 2024 for naira abuse.
A video of him spraying money at a party went viral and led to his conviction with no option of a fine.
TikToker Teee Dollar
Similarly, TikToker Teee Dollar, alongside another individual, was sentenced to six months imprisonment in Lagos after a video surfaced showing them dancing and spraying N200 notes.
Muhammed Kabir Sa’ad
Another content creator, Muhammed Kabir Sa’ad was arrested in Kaduna after releasing a video where he threw Naira notes on the ground.
He stepped on them and dared the EFCC to arrest him.

Celebrities Under EFCC’s Radar
E-Money
Billionaire businessman Emeka Okonkwo, better known as E-Money, was arrested in April 2025 for allegedly spraying both Naira and US dollars at public events.
Although he was later released with a warning, his arrest was widely publicised.
Iyabo Ojo
Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo was invited by the EFCC
This was after she was seen in viral videos spraying money during her daughter’s traditional wedding in Lagos.

Additionally, Kelly Okungbowa, popularly called Ebo Stone has been arraigned in court by the EFCC for naira abuse and mutilation.
Another notable case involved a former aide to Governor Okpebholo, who was also charged with naira abuse
Also, he is currently facing trial.
Others In The Rader
So far, at least three social media influencers and celebrities have been jailed for naira abuse.
Others, such as E-Money, Iyabo Ojo, AY, and Ebo Stone and Cubana Chief Priest, have either been questioned or warned.
Some are currently undergoing legal proceedings.
The EFCC’s intensified focus on celebrities is deliberate, as public figures hold significant influence.
Their unchecked actions could normalise illegal behaviour and mislead their large followings.
The Commission’s crackdown aims to deter further abuse, uphold respect for Nigeria’s currency, and reduce the cost of replacing mutilated notes.
In conclusion, the days of spraying money at events or casually flaunting naira notes for attention are numbered.
