Business owners and traders in the popular Ajah Market near Alesh Bus Stop in the Lekki area of Lagos woke up to the greatest shock of their lives on Monday morning.

These traders had closed their shops on Saturday and headed home to enjoy the weekend.

Many may have even taken some little money out of their sales to enjoy themselves, unknown to them, the worse was waiting ahead.

Millions Lost As Fire Engulfs Ajah Market In Lagos (VIDEO)

Sunday came, and many stormed the church for worship, went home, and started preparations for a brand new week.

However, at around 9 p.m, as these traders rested in their sleep ahead of the next day, a devastating fire swept through the market, reducing goods worth millions of naira to ashes.

The spread very fast affecting numerous shops stocked with highly flammable materials.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), led by Permanent Secretary, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, responded promptly, working alongside the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services to bring the situation under control.

The exact cause of the fire remains unknown at this point.

However, no lives were lost or injuries sustained, as the market was closed for the day and traders were not on-site.

Oke-Osanyintolu said: “The LASEMA Response Team, along with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, managed to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring buildings.

“Efforts are ongoing to completely extinguish the fire and salvage remaining valuables.”
