Factors Influencing Onion Prices

Bag Size And Season

Onion prices in Nigeria vary significantly based on the bag size and the time of year.

Bags are categorised into small, medium, and jumbo sizes, and prices are determined accordingly.

Seasonal variations due to harvesting cycles also play a critical role in price determination.

Prices typically peak during off-seasons when the supply dwindles and drop when the market is flooded with onions post-harvest.

Geographic Location

Geographically, Kano State in northern Nigeria is known as a hub for onion production.

Due to its abundant local supply, it often offers the lowest prices.

Advertisements

Being one of the top onion-producing states, Kano boasts of fresh, quality onions that are distributed to various parts of the country.

Transportation Costs

Transportation and other additional costs contribute to price differences across regions.

In major cities like Lagos and Abuja, due to the distance from primary production centers like Kano, often witness higher prices.

The costs incurred in transporting the onions from farms to these markets are factored into the final retail price, affecting affordability for end consumers.

Type Of Onion

The variety of onions also impacts the market price.

Red onions, preferred for their taste and nutritional value, are priced higher than their white counterparts.

The demand for specific types of onions, influenced by culinary preferences and perceived health benefits, further dictates their market value.

Market Trends

As of March 18, 2024, the price for a 100kg bag of onions in Kano markets ranges between 45,000 and 48,000 Naira.

This reflects the current market conditions and cost influences.

In contrast, metropolitan areas with greater logistic and operational expenses report higher prices.

Often, this pushes the upper limit of the average national price range of 40,000 to 50,000 Naira for a bag of onions.

Shockingly, many of these food items are produced here in Nigeria, yet, Nigerians now toil and sweat, before they could afford them.

If Nigerians were ever told that buying palm oil will be this expensive, the bearer of such news, even if he were to be a prophet, would have received the mockery of his life.

But indeed, the price of palm oil, a staple commodity in both culinary and industrial sectors, is witnessing a notable upswing.

Advertisements

As of March 18, 2024, the cost of this essential commodity that lubricates soups and other cuisines is experiencing a rise.

Prices now range from 600 to 700 Naira per litre, reflecting the dynamic market conditions and its pivotal role in the Nigerian economy.

Distribution And Pricing Dynamics

Palm oil is commonly sold in quantities of 5, 10, and 25 litres, but it is also available per kilogram and ton, catering to various consumer and industrial needs.

The pricing per litre for palm oil in Nigeria as of March 18, 2024, is detailed as follows:

– 4 litres (approximately 1 gallon) – ₦4,200
– 5 litres – ₦6,000
– 10 litres – ₦12,000
– 25 litres – ₦24,000
– 50 litres – ₦48,000

Furthermore, the average price of a gallon (about 4 litres) stands at ₦2,400.

The cost per kilogram ranges from 1,000 to 1,500 Naira.

Basically, this is influenced by the fluctuating economy and market supply-demand dynamics.

Regional Production Variations

The southeastern and south-south regions of Nigeria, particularly states like Imo, Abia, Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Delta, and Edo, are renowned as the highest producers of palm oil.

The geographical concentration of production in these areas significantly affects the regional pricing and availability of palm oil.

This makes it more accessible and potentially cheaper in these producer states compared to other parts of Nigeria.

Palm Oil’s Multifaceted Use

Palm oil’s importance transcends the culinary realm, as it is integrated into various industrial products, including soaps, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.

Its nutritional value, rich in carotenoids and vitamin E, underscores its significance in addressing malnutrition and promoting general health.

Market Influences And Economic Implications

The price variance of palm oil in Nigeria is attributed to several factors.

The bodies of the soldiers, which showed signs of mutilation, were recovered by the Joint Task Force led by Major General Jamal Abdussalam, the General Officer Commanding 6 Division, Nigerian Army, in the Okuama community.

Among the casualties were a commanding officer, two Majors, one Captain, 12 soldiers, and one civilian, all of whom lost their lives in an ambush on Thursday, March 14, 2024.

The conflict stemmed from a longstanding communal land dispute between neighboring communities, escalating since January 27, 2024, when youths from Okoloba reportedly ambushed and killed three Okuama youths – Igho Meshack, Godspower Awusa, and Okiemute Agbabuleke – as they returned from Okwagbe.

In a message directly penned by the Director-General, Joseph Ochogwu, the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) highlighted the detrimental impact of recent events on the country’s reputation.

It is a sad incident happening particularly at a time when President Bola Tinubu is actively addressing security challenges.

Also, Ochogwu emphasised the need to appreciate the efforts of security personnel in safeguarding the nation rather than witnessing their tragic loss of life.

He expressed the firm stance of IPCR against the recent incident involving the killing of 16 soldiers in the autonomous community of Okuama, Ewu Kingdom, situated in the Ughelli South Area of Delta State.

The statement issued by the Director-General (DG) highlights a pressing issue facing many nations: the challenge of maintaining peace and security amid acts of violence.

Furthermore, the DG rightfully emphasised the need for unity and support for security personnel who risk their lives to protect the nation.

“It undermines efforts to promote peace and development, tarnishing the nation’s image.

“At a time when the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is actively addressing security concerns, such incidents only serve to hinder progress.

“The DG’s call for unity and support for the military is crucial.

“Regardless of individual differences or regional affiliations, all citizens should rally behind the armed forces in their efforts to safeguard the nation.

“Recognising and commending the bravery and sacrifice of security personnel is essential to boost their morale and encourage continued dedication to national security”.

Furthermore, the DG called for a thorough investigation into the incident.

“It is necessary to uncover the truth and ensure accountability.

“It is vital for the military to maintain professionalism even in the face of provocation, adhering to established protocols and upholding the rule of law.

“Overall, the statement underscores the importance of collective action in addressing security challenges and underscores the need for unwavering support for those tasked with protecting the nation’s sovereignty and ensuring the safety of its citizens.”

List Of African Countries Facing Internet Outages

The use of fiber optic cables has become widespread in Africa, but there are significant differences in access across regions.

List Of African Countries Facing Internet Outages

Advertisements

This is due to major investments from both public and private organizations over the last decade, as explained by Jess Auerbach Jahajeeah, an associate professor at the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business, during an interview with The Conversation.

Explanation

“Basically, all regular internet connections in Africa rely on fiber optic cables. Even landlocked countries depend on this network because they have agreements with coastal countries where the cables come up from underground and connect to terrestrial systems.”

Advertisements

She also noted that some regions are less affected by cable damage due to their geographic location.

“Looking at an interactive map of fiber optic cables, South Africa is relatively well-positioned. When there are cable breaks, the network is affected for a few hours before internet traffic is redirected,” Auerbach stated.

Advertisements

However, in several African countries like Sierra Leone and Liberia, most cables do not have “spurs” (similar to off-ramps on a road), so only one fiber optic cable serves the country. When this cable breaks, internet traffic in these countries stops.

This raises the question of which African countries are most affected by internet outages. According to Citinews Africa, they categorize the severity of internet outages into four levels: severe, high, medium, and low.

Below is a list of countries affected by damaged cables and how severe their internet connectivity is:

Severe

  • Ivory Coast

High

  • Liberia
  • Benin
  • Ghana
  • Burkina Faso

Medium

  • Togo
  • Cameroon
  • Gabon
  • Namibia
  • Niger

Low

  • Nigeria
  • Lesotho
  • South Africa

SSANU, NASU Shut Universities As Nationwide Strike Commences

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) have kicked off a nationwide strike.

According to the unions, this strike is due to the alleged unfair treatment and salary discrepancies by the Federal Government.

SSANU, NASU Shut Universities As Nationwide Strike Commences

Before now, the unions had issued a warning to close down university hostels and power supply if their demands were not met by Monday, March 18, 2024.

Speaking earlier, SSANU’s National President, Muhammed Ibrahim, highlighted that 2022 arrears have not been paid to members, including Vice Chancellors, registrars, and bursars.

Advertisements

Ibrahim confirmed on Sunday that both unions were prepared for the nationwide strike.

It Has Started

In the midst of these events, Nigeria’s Minister for Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, asserted earlier that he was unaware of the planned strike by SSANU/NASU.

Advertisements

Contrary to this, Ibrahim, while appearing on a Channels Television’s Morning Show programme, confirmed that the strike had indeed commenced.

“Definitely, it (the strike) has already started.

“As of today (Monday), all our workers in registry, bursary, works and maintenance, security, and students’ affairs have withdrawn their services.

“Nothing moves within the administration of any public university in Nigeria and that will be the case for the next seven days until and unless the needful is done,” the SSANU president stated on Monday morning.

Assurances

Ibrahim emphasised that the non-academic unions have not been contacted by any government representative.

He pointed out that although some unofficial contact has been made, their assurances cannot be trusted completely.

He questioned why certain government officials were not fully complying with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to pay the arrears for 2022.

Furthermore, he mentioned that despite issuing a seven-day notice last Monday, the Minister of Labour, Nkiruka Onyejeocha, has not reached out to the aggrieved unions.

According to Ibrahim, this lack of responsiveness is a departure from the approach taken by the former Labour Minister, Chris Ngige.

He emphasised that “if the government fails to address the unions’ demands after the seven-day warning strike, which began today, the unions will resort to their strategies and determine the next course of action”.

Do Not Legalise Lesbianism And Bi-Sexualism – Scripture Union

The battle for the legalisation of same sex rights in Nigeria has been on for quite sometime now.

However, religion culture, tradition and a few other beliefs have all framed the attitude and words of people against it.

Advertisements

Now, the Scripture Union of Nigeria has called on the Federal Government and lawmakers to resist the pressure of legalising lesbianism and bisexuality.

The union’s national chairman, Wilfred Onu, made this call at a press conference held at the headquarters of the union

The briefing held at Samonda in Ibadan, Oyo State’s capital on March 16.

Onu explained that the legislation brings serious danger to the entire global race.

“We are deeply concerned about the seeming acceptance of these unbiblical ideas, contrary to the clear admonitions in the Holy Bible in utter affront and disregard to the legal implications contained in the Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act, 2014; and other statutes and laws that criminalised such conduct in several states of the federation of Nigeria.

Lesbianism Promoted In The Western World?

“The promotion of this ideology by some religious and political leaders, especially in the Western world, is alarming.

“We can no longer keep silent and allow this immoral and debased movement to destroy the fabric of our human and societal decency, values, and public morality.

“As a union that is rooted in Biblical principles, we re-affirm our dedication to promoting traditional Christian values and principles.

“Also, we affirm that the fulcrum of the LGBTQ+ ideology is unbiblical, immoral, and appears to be founded on lies and a penchant for inhumane living.

Advertisements

“We, therefore, call on the entire Christian community to firmly uphold and advocate the message of God’s love and redemption for all.

“They should totally reject LGBTQ+ ideology that opposes or contradicts the teachings and principles/injunctions of the Holy Bible.

Preservation Of Traditional Family Values

“We call on all Christians and true lovers of humanity to rise in defense of the sanctity of family life and decent society.

“The union unequivocally rejects the harmful agenda of those persons, organisations, and agencies who are promoting these ideologies”.

Furthermore, the union the emphasises that its mandate from God is to serve children, youths, and families.

“We are committed to safeguarding, protecting, defending, and promoting their innocence from harmful influences that deviate from Biblical teachings.

“In addition, we advocate for the preservation of traditional family values and marriage as defined in the Scriptures”.
