Tokunbo Wahab stood before cameras with a firm message: Lagos will no longer turn a blind eye to environmental abuse.

From July 1, 2025, those caught littering, dumping waste illegally, or defacing the city’s streets risk a ₦250,000 fine or up to three months in jail.

Zero Tolerance For Environmental Abuse

During a recent media briefing, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, delivered the warning with clarity.

He announced on the government’s official X handle that Lagos will no longer tolerate acts of environmental sabotage.

Ban On Single-Use Plastics Begins

“From July, we will fully enforce the ban on single-use plastics,” Wahab said.

“We will penalise anyone who dumps refuse illegally, litters public spaces, or defaces the environment.

“These offences will attract severe consequences.”

Over 3,000 Offenders Already Arrested

Already, officials have arrested over 3,000 offenders.

Moreover, the ministry has increased surveillance and launched broader public awareness campaigns to drive home its message.

Wahab didn’t stop there.

He reaffirmed the government’s stance on critical issues: officials will continue to arrest cart pushers, enforce the ban on public defecation, and remove illegal street traders.

Clean Sallah Campaign

“This is about saving our environment—for ourselves and for future generations,” he stressed.

As the Sallah celebrations draw near, he urged residents to honour the season with a commitment to cleanliness and shared responsibility.

He appealed directly to Lagosians: “Bag your waste properly.

“Don’t dump it in drains or on road medians.

“Hand it over to your assigned PSP operator.

“We all must take responsibility.”

Finally, Wahab issued a rallying call: “The time for change has come. Let’s protect our Lagos—together”.
