Kendrick Lamar opened up about the deeper meaning behind his Hot 100 No. 1 hit and Drake diss track, “Not Like Us,” during an interview with SZA for Harper’s Bazaar.
The rapper described the track as embodying the type of man he represents. “‘Not Like Us’ is the energy of who I am, the type of man I represent,” Lamar said.
“This man has morals, he has values, and he stands for something without pandering.”
He said that the song reflects his ability to recognize mistakes and express fear-based experiences without feeling diminished.
SZA also inquired about the perception of anger in Lamar’s music, particularly after his feud with Drake.
Lamar responded, “I don’t believe I’m an angry person, but I believe in love and war. My awareness of that allows me to react but not identify with anger.”
This is the first time he has spoken extensively about ‘Not Like Us’, a track that played a significant role in his ongoing rivalry with Drake.
