Harry Kane has been brutally told he still hasn’t proved that he is worth €100 million after Bayern Munich’s Champions League defeat to Aston Villa.
The 31-year-old English striker, who joined the German giants from Tottenham Hotspur for a staggering €100 million (£84m/$110m), is now under scrutiny, with critics questioning whether his performances have justified the hefty price tag that the Bavarians paid to Tottenham last summer.
Kane, despite a few flashes of quality, was largely a peripheral figure during Bayern’s 1-0 defeat to the Midlands club.
He found himself isolated for long stretches, with Bayern struggling to create clear opportunities and although he got a chance to score the equaliser, the striker was unable to get his name on the scoresheet.
Didi Hamann, who has never been shy to voice his opinions, was quick to point out that Kane has not yet lived up to the lofty expectations placed on him.
In his column for Sky Sports Germany, Hamann wrote: “Kane also had a personally sobering evening in Birmingham – in addition to the defeat.
“I said after the European Championship in the summer that he still has to prove that he is worth the €100 million – even though he scored over 30 goals last year.
“He wasn’t brought in to score a hat-trick against Darmstadt.
“He was brought in to score against Leverkusen and Aston Villa and to score in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
“Also, he hasn’t done that yet.
“But I remain skeptical about the star striker.”
Did You Know?
Kane’s arrival in Bavaria was seen as the final piece of the puzzle for a Bayern team seeking European dominance.
However, his recent performances in high-profile fixtures have left many questioning whether he can deliver when it matters most, especially after the team’s struggles in recent matches.
Prior to the defeat at Villa Park, Bayern had been held to a draw by Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, another match where Kane failed to make his mark.
“Of course, Bayern hope that he finds form because the discussions will come.
“And I think they are not that far away,” Hamann added.
“If I am so dominant against Leverkusen and Villa, then I expect one of the best players in the business to create a goal-scoring opportunity out of nothing in 90 minutes and become a goal threat.
“That is not the impression at the moment.”

Kane is no stranger to adversity and will be eager to respond on the pitch and demonstrate that he can be the difference-maker Bayern need in big games.
As the Champions League group stage progresses, all eyes will be on him to lead the German champions to glory.
He will be back in action in a Bundesliga fixture against Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday where he will have another opportunity to prove his doubters wrong.
