Kaduna varsity ASUU joins 2 weeks warning strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Kaduna State University chapter has joined the two weeks warning strike as directed by the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU.

The union made the decision known in a letter dated March 10, notifying the Vice Chancellor of the university Prof. Muhammad Tanko of their decision.

The letter, signed by the union Chairperson, Dr Tukur Abdulkadir and Secretary, Dr Peter Adamu, was obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna on Wednesday.

“We wish to notify you of the strike action of our union to press home our demands.

“This is the decision taken at the ASUU National Executive Council Meeting held at Enugu State University of Technology, between March 7 and March 8.

“The Key issues that triggered the strike are non-compliance to the 2017 and 2019 ASUU-Federal Government Memorandum of Action and neglect of the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement,” the letter said.

The union also said that at the local level, there were protracted issues that have not been resolved which included the non-remittance of pension contributions and non-payment of salary arrears.

Other issues itemised by the union were the centralisation of payment of salaries with all attendant hardships on staff and promotion arrears.

“You may wish to know that our branch is a chartered member of ASUU alongside over 60 branches in the country.

“It is on this basis that KASU branch of ASUU held a congress on March 10 and agreed to join the two weeks warning strike in line with NEC directives with effect from March 11.

“It is our hope that there will be no victimisation of members and the usual industrial harmony between the management and the union will be sustained,” the union said.

Meanwhile, the Registrar of the university, Samuel Manshop, in a notice to all staff and students said that academic activities in the university would not be hampered by the ASUU strike.

Manshop said that the First Semester examination for the 2019/2020 Academic session would commence on March 23, urging the university community to take note. (NAN)
