In a major step to address Nigeria’s healthcare challenges, President Bola Tinubu has approved the National Policy on Health Workforce Migration.
This policy marks a significant effort to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system, aiming to meet the needs of all Nigerians while supporting and keeping its healthcare workforce.
The new policy was announced on his X handle by Prof. Muhammad Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare.
According to him, this new policy aims to tackle the ongoing issue of Nigerian healthcare workers leaving for greener pastures.
The policy is designed not only to respond to this migration but also to manage and reverse it.
Increased Workload
With many healthcare professionals seeking better opportunities abroad, their departure has led to increased workloads and extended hours for those who remain.
The new policy introduces several key measures to improve the situation.
It focuses on creating a better work environment to help retain skilled professionals, integrating advanced technologies such as Electronic Medical Records and telehealth.

Also, the government hopes to invest in ongoing professional development with international training opportunities.
Furthermore, the policy encourages the return of Nigerian healthcare workers from abroad by making it easier for them to reintegrate. This comes with appealing incentives.
To support a healthy work-life balance, Tinubu’s approved policy includes provisions for regular health checks and mental health support, aimed at reducing burnout and improving job satisfaction.
The policy will be managed by the National Human Resources for Health Programme, working with state governments to ensure it is implemented effectively.
It also includes agreements with other countries to protect Nigeria’s interests while respecting the rights of healthcare professionals.
