As news spread that former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt.Hon Ghali Umar Na’abba has died, his long time friend ,Alhaji Nastura Sheriff Ahmed has debunked the story insisting that Na’abba was alive.
The former Speaker also broke his silence, saying he was alive in London. Sheriff Ahmed said on Friday in a statement, that the former Speaker was well and hearty in the United Kingdom and would return to Nigeria when the situation permits.
According to Nastura Sheriff Ahmed, “kindly disregard any statement claiming that the former speaker Honourable Ghali Umar Naabba has died.”
“Hon Ghali is healthy and doing great in London. He was not back to Nigeria because of the airport shutdown as we spoke some minutes ago.”
“We pray that Allah grants him long life to continue contributing his quota to national growth.” “To those behind the rumour, kindly note that nothing good will come out of spreading fake news.,” he said.
Similarly, a terse statement said to have emanated from the former Speaker, reads:
“For the information of all my colleagues, I’m hale and hearty here in London. I will be back in Abuja as soon as flights are available.
Those spreading such rumors will definitely pay a high price for their mischief. Cheers to all of you.”
However, the Coalition of Northern Groups, CNG,said in a statement on Friday issued to journalists in Kaduna ,that reports of Na’abba’s death were downright fake.
The statement signed by Abdul-Azeez Suleiman,CNG’s spokesperson, said: “It has come to our knowledge that news of the death of a prominent northern elder, and a former House of Representatives Speaker, Ghali Umar Naabbah has been trending online for several hours.”
“Quite unfortunately, the report has been lifted by a few respectable mainstream media adding weight to it.
The CNG wishes to state that Honourable Naabbah is very much alive and healthy contrary to the fabricated reports.”
“We have been in constant personal contact with Mr Naabbah since the report broke. We categorically state that the reports are completely wrong, unfounded and mischievous.”
“We call on the media operators and their executives to note that the report is downright fake, and the true position is that Naabbah is quite well and we’ve been in contact. The public should also disregard the reports and attach no importance to them whatsoever.”
In a related development ,a University Don, Sule Joe said that it was wrong to wish death for any living being.
“All living things will die one day, how, when and where solely remains as the will of the Creator of the universe. Don’t even wish your arch enemies death, because the difference between you and the departed is just a matter of “time”. I suggest that at this trying period of human history we should be fervent, dogged and positive, always wishing and cheering those who have health challenges speedy recuperation.”
” I was touched yesterday when someone was happy to draw my attention to a social media picture celebrating the death of Gen. Ibrahim Babangida. My response was “how can you celebrate his death ,it is awful.”
“Let’s wish our leaders good health and constantly confess positive things about them so that this country can be great again. Long live to all with poor health condition,” he said.
