Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, has vowed to honor any coalition agreement that requires him to serve only one term in office, pledging to vacate power on May 28, 2031, a day before the constitutional handover date.
Speaking during a live XSpace session titled #PeterObiOnParallelFacts, which drew over 10,000 listeners and nearly 3,000 comments, Obi said his political ambition is driven by a desire to fix Nigeria — not hold power.
“If the agreement is one term, I will leave on May 28, 2031 — not even May 29. I am not desperate to be president. I am desperate to see Nigeria work,” Obi declared.
The interactive session explored pressing national issues, including coalition politics, growing insecurity, and President Bola Tinubu’s frequent foreign travels.
Obi underlined the significance of zoning and political fairness, citing how he respected such arrangements during his time in Anambra State, even at personal political cost.
On the possibility of a joint 2027 ticket with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Obi dismissed any ongoing negotiations, saying the focus should remain on solving Nigeria’s real challenges.
“If the coalition is about sharing tickets and power for its sake, count me out. I’m not interested. I want a coalition that stops the killings in Borno, puts food on people’s tables, and gets our industries working.”

Furthermore, he explained that resistance among his supporters toward a political merger was based on principle, not rejection.
“It’s about Nigeria first. We’ve never even discussed tickets.”
Obi also slammed President Tinubu’s recent visit to St. Lucia, describing it as out of touch with the realities at home.
“You can’t build strong international relations when your domestic house is on fire,” he said, pointing out that St. Lucia has fewer residents than Ajegunle in Lagos.

Citing the continued violence in states like Zamfara, Benue, and Niger, Obi warned that leadership requires presence, not showmanship.
“We’re losing lives… and we’re gallivanting. Leaders must stay and lead from the front.”
