As the sun cast a warm glow over the campus on a quiet Monday morning, a sense of anticipation filled the air, as universities wait in eagerness to hear from the new leader who would guide their institution forward.

Governing Councils Of Federal Universities To Be Inaugurated On July 4

With a poised and confident demeanor, Prof. Aisha Maikudi stepped up to the podium to deliver her acceptance speech as the Acting Vice Chancellor.

Her voice carried a blend of determination and excitement as she addressed the attentive audience.

“In a significant step towards strengthening our academic institutions,” Prof. Maikudi began, “we will inaugurate the Governing Councils of Federal universities, polytechnics, and other tertiary institutions on July 4, 2024.”

The announcement was met with applause and a renewed sense of hope.

Prof. Maikudi’s words marked the beginning of a new chapter. Meanwhile, it is not just for the University of Abuja, but for the entire educational landscape of the nation.

Universities Appointed Councils

A total of 560 individuals were appointed to the governing councils and boards of Federal Government-owned tertiary institutions.

President Bola Tinubu approved the reconstitution of the Governing Councils and Boards of federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

In an earlier statement, Nnamdi Mbaeri, the Permanent Secretary of General Services in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, noted that the government approved the measure to effectively manage Nigerian tertiary institutions.

For the University of Ibadan, the President appointed Chief Bisi Akande as the Chairman of the governing council. The board members are Alexander Ajipe, Nelson Alapa, Ifeoma Nwankwo, and Prof. Emmanuel Alo.

Chairman Of Governing Council

Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) was appointed as the Chairman of the governing council of the University of Lagos. The council members are Bello Kumo, Prof. Idowu Mark, Niyi Akande, and Bola Njoku

Isa Yuguda chairs the board of the National Open University. The council members are Goddy Etta, Yomi Balogun, Deborah Apah, and Hingah Biem.

Siyan Oyeweso was appointed to head the governing council of Obafemi Awolowo University.

While Edward Sarki, Joseph Abaagu, Wahaab Owokoniran, and Abubakar Kachaalla are members of the council.

Also, Adebayo Shittu, Muiz Banire, and Senator Florence Ita Giwa were appointed as the chairpersons of the governing boards for David Umahi University of Medicine in Ebonyi State.

They are governing Federal University of Transportation in Katsina State, and Federal Polytechnic in Ugep, Cross River State, among others.
