Getafe president, Angel Torres, has criticised his own player, Christantus Uche, for bringing attention to racism in La Liga.
Per The Athletic, Torres has criticised Uche for speaking out against the racism he says he has experienced since joining the club from Cueta.
In an interview with ESPN, Uche said that fans called him “a black this, black that” and added that he felt referees would ignore his pleas for help when he was fouled.
La Liga has had to deal with a chequered history of racist abuse, with Vinicius Jr repeatedly subjected to vile taunts from crowds.
This week, a fan who abused both Vinicius Jr and Villarreal’s Samu Chukwueze has been given a one-year prison sentence and a three-year stadium ban.
However, in comments that shine a light on how normalised the problem of racism has become in La Liga, Torres said:
“He doesn’t understand.
“How can he tell you that?
“He can’t tell you that.
“I think you should be more correct and respectful with those things.
“When he’s spent a year here, two years and he understands Spanish, he can say what he wants.
“But now… we hope that the corresponding committees understand it and that it’s simply a warning.”
Pressed on Uche’s criticism of referees, Torres added: “I don’t want to blame or (say) the person who interviewed him is the only one to blame but from now on what he’ll (Uche) have to do is not speak.”

However, Uche has also claimed that it is a “dream come true” to have the chance to compete in Spanish football. Getafe play Alaves on Saturday.
