If you have been gearing up for the planned nationwide strike over the removal of fuel subsidy, you will have to hold your peace for a little longer.
This is because the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have put the planned strike on hold.
The decision to suspend plans to begin the strike was announced on Monday after a meeting between the Federal Government and the unions.
At the meeting held in Aso Villa were officials of the two unions and the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Gbajabiamila said the Federal Government, the TUC and the NLC would form a joint committee on the matter.
World Bank Loan On Subsidy
Basically, this committee will assess the unions’ proposals for pay increases or awards and set a framework and timetable for implementation.
“The Federal Government, the TUC, and the NLC would review the World Bank Financed Cash Transfer Scheme and propose inclusion of low-income earners in the programme,” part of the statement read.

On Wednesday of last week, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited unveiled a new national fuel pricing structure.
The development saw fuel pump price increase from 197 Naira per litre to over 500 Naira.
Furthermore, the increase in petrol pump price has pushed the cost of going to work higher.
Also, prices of goods and services has started to increase.
This resulted to NLC and TUC threatening to embark on a nationwide strike on Wednesday, June 7.
