Her sister, Lakshmi, announced her passing in a heartfelt Facebook post on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, stating that Ananda died peacefully at 11:35 a.m. in hospice care at her Los Angeles home.

She described Ananda’s journey as one marked by strength and grace, combining both conventional and alternative treatments.

Ananda rose to fame in the late 1990s as one of MTV’s standout hosts, gaining popularity for her work on Total Request Live (TRL) and Spring Break.

Known for her intelligent and empathetic interview style, she later transitioned to daytime television with The Ananda Lewis Show, and also served as a correspondent for several major news outlets.

A long-time animal welfare advocate, Ananda worked with the Humane Society and used her platform to speak on social issues.

In 2020, she publicly revealed her breast cancer diagnosis and confirmed in 2024 that the illness had progressed to stage 4.

She previously shared that she had declined an early mastectomy, hoping her experience would encourage others to prioritise early detection.

Her death came on the same day her 14-year-old son graduated from middle school, a moment her sister described as “terribly bittersweet.”

Tributes have continued to pour in from celebrities and colleagues who credit Ananda for inspiring their lives and careers. A memorial service is currently being planned.

Ananda Lewis is remembered for her powerful presence on screen, her advocacy, and her lasting impact on pop culture and journalism.
