The Nigeria U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, brought pride to the nation by winning the Fair Play Award at the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, held in the Dominican Republic.
Recognised for their discipline and sportsmanship, the Flamingos received the award despite being eliminated in the quarter-finals after a 2-0 loss to the USA.
Nigerian players Shakirat Moshood and Celia Segura both tied for the tournament’s Bronze Boot with four goals each; however, the Spanish forward edged ahead due to a higher assist count (2-1).
Meanwhile, Korea DPR winger Jon Il-chong clinched the Adidas Golden Ball, awarded to the tournament’s best player.
Spanish forwards Pau Comendador and Celia Segura were also honoured, taking home the Adidas Silver and Bronze Balls, respectively.
