FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, announced that the 2026 World Cup final will feature a historic first-ever halftime show. This addition to the tournament will take place at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, which will host the final match on July 19, 2026.
The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, promises to be an expanded and thrilling tournament.
With 48 teams participating, the event will feature 104 matches, including an additional knockout round. This increased competition is expected to captivate fans worldwide and provide more opportunities for teams to showcase their skills.
What is Halftime?
Halftime is a scheduled break in the middle of a sports match, allowing players to rest, receive tactical instructions, and prepare for the second half of the game.
It also provides entertainment opportunities for spectators, with performances or analysis segments.
While football (soccer) traditionally uses halftime for team discussions, other sports like American football, basketball, and rugby have made halftime entertainment a key part of major events.
The Super Bowl halftime show, for example, is one of the most-watched performances in the world.
FIFA Partners with Global Citizen for the Show
Infantino revealed the details of the halftime show on Instagram, confirming that FIFA will partner with Global Citizen, an international education and advocacy organization, to bring this exciting event to life.
Coldplay to Perform at the Final
British band Coldplay will also be involved in the halftime show, promising an unforgettable experience for fans attending the final match in New Jersey.
It must be noted that the United States has a long tradition of staging halftime shows for the final matches of its favourite sporting pastime, also called American football.
