Over the weekend, the federal government took a significant step forward in its green transportation initiative.

The government distributed 1,200 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion kits to five states.

This effort is part of a broader strategy to move away from petrol and diesel-powered vehicles and towards more sustainable CNG options.

The Director/CEO of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi, revealed these developments in Abuja.

He explained that the government was determined to increase the number of vehicles that run on CNG.

This push aims to reduce Nigeria’s costly dependence on petrol and diesel.

Each year, the country spends between $6 and $8 billion subsidising these fuels, with a significant portion coming from borrowed money.

Federal Government’s Targets

Oluwagbemi detailed the ambitious targets of the CNG car initiative.

Moreover, the government aims to convert at least 18,000 vehicles to CNG by the end of this year.

To support this goal, they plan to introduce an additional 250,000 conversion kits into the country before the first quarter of 2025.

In the next 30 days alone, they expect to receive 12,000 more kits, which will help reach the 18,000-conversion target.

By the end of the year, the plan is to have converted 21,000 vehicles, thus setting the stage for the 150,000 vehicle conversions targeted for the following year.

Additionally, the initiative has seen remarkable growth in CNG car conversion centers.

When the programme started, there were only seven centres in Nigeria.

Thanks to the ongoing efforts, this number has now exceeded 130.

The target is to expand this to 250 centres by the end of the year.

Every day, new businesses and entrepreneurs approach the initiative.

Also, they seek advice on how to establish these centres and contribute to the country’s green transportation goals.
