What appeared to be a legitimate consumer rights group in bustling Aba was, in fact, a front for deception.
For months, the Community Crime Prevention Initiative of Nigeria (CCPIN) operated with false authority, issuing notices and collecting complaints under the guise of working with the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).
But on Wednesday, the charade ended.
False Claims And Deception
Officers raided the premises at 214, Aba-Owerri Road after receiving credible intelligence that CCPIN was impersonating the FCCPC.
The group falsely claimed to be an “Authorised Consumer Protection NGO” and misled the public by issuing fake notices, staging sham surveillance operations, and using unofficial phone lines to collect complaints.
Fake Consumer Rights Group Operator Arrested
During the operation, law enforcement officers arrested the operator, Onwuka K. Okorie, and detained him at the World Bank Police Station in Abayi-Aba.
Investigators also seized forged documents and materials displaying the FCCPC’s name and logo.

FCCPC Denounces CCPIN
Following the arrest, the FCCPC immediately clarified that it never authorised or partnered with CCPIN.
The Commission emphasised that no NGO, private body, or individual holds the legal authority to enforce consumer protection laws or act on its behalf.
Public Advisory Issued
To prevent further deception, the FCCPC advised the public to verify any enforcement claims or consumer campaigns.
Citizens can contact the Commission directly through its hotlines—08056002020 and 08056003030—or visit www.fccpc.gov.ng and its social media platforms (@fccpcnigeria).
Commitment To Integrity
Ultimately, the FCCPC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, consumer protection, and market integrity.
It urged Nigerians to ignore any announcements or actions linked to CCPIN or similar impostors.
