Everton manager Sean Dyche has criticized VAR after a penalty decision was overturned in their 3-0 loss to Brighton.
Despite warnings from Premier League officials to avoid criticizing VAR, Dyche expressed frustration with the decision, arguing that referee Simon Hooper’s initial call was correct.
Dyche said: “He (the referee) makes a decision in a perfect viewing point and lo and behold is called over to overturn it. So what is the point of a high bar then?
He also pointed out technical issues with the VAR monitor, which required a second, smaller screen to be used.
The Premier League Match Centre explained that the VAR recommended an on-field review, deeming that Calvert-Lewin’s foot landed on Dunk’s foot, and no foul was committed.
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler agreed with the overturned decision, calling it “clear” that the original penalty call was incorrect.
