Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has raised concerns over the forthcoming governorship elections in Ondo and Edo States.
He said politicians were arming thugs in both states, and using inciting statements during campaigns.
The IG stated that the Election Security Threat Assessment Reports submitted by the Commissioners of Police from both states in a meeting held on August 25 revealed the challenges ahead of the polls.

He said, “The Election Security Threat Analysis reveals amongst other indicators: arming and movement of political thugs, use of inciting statements during political campaigns, high likelihood of violence and possible cross attack by political opponents, misinformation/disinformation aimed at heating-up of the polity and deliberate efforts at delegitimizing government institutions involved in the electoral processes.”
He warned politicians to conduct themselves appropriately, and also advised Commissioners of Police in both states to tighten up security and improve upon preparations ahead of the polls.
Adamu gave the warning in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday by the Force spokesman, DCP Frank Mba, titled, ‘Conduct yourselves and play by the rules: IGP warns Edo and Ondo politicians.’
The statement further read, “The IGP, however, warns the politicians and their supporters in Edo and Ondo that the Force would not hesitate to bring the full weight of the law on anyone or group, irrespective of status, that may want to sabotage the security arrangement being emplaced for the elections.”
