The trial of music mogul Diddy officially began on Monday, May 12, 2025, in Manhattan, following the completion of jury selection.
The case, which has drawn international attention, centres on serious allegations of sex trafficking, racketeering, and coercion.
A total of twelve jurors, eight men and four women, were selected, along with six alternates. Some admitted to being aware of Diddy’s music career and the charges against him, but the presiding judge ruled they could still be fair and impartial.
Diddy’s legal team had earlier questioned the racial fairness of the process after several Black jurors were dismissed. However, the court upheld the selection as lawful and unbiased.
Four jurors are white, while the remaining eight are people of colour, including Black, Asian, and others.
Prosecutors allege that Diddy used his celebrity status to lure women into abusive, drug-fuelled situations, including so-called “Freak Offs” private gatherings where multiple acts of sexual exploitation allegedly took place.
Several women, including his ex-girlfriend, singer Cassie Ventura are expected to testify during the trial. Graphic content such as hotel surveillance footage may also be presented as evidence.
Diddy has denied all the charges, maintaining that all encounters were consensual and claiming the allegations are a calculated effort to destroy his reputation. He remains in custody in Brooklyn after being denied bail three times.
Family members, including his mother and children, attended court to show support. The trial is not being televised and is expected to last approximately eight weeks.
If found guilty, Diddy could face a minimum of 15 years in prison, with a possible life sentence.
