Afrobeat star, Davido, has met with veteran highlife musician Bright Chimezie in Lagos, days after a video call in which he acknowledged Chimezie’s influence on his latest track, With You, featuring Omah Lay.
Both music stars met at Davido’s Lagos residence. Upon arrival, it was a warm show of respect and admiration.
Davido personally welcomed Chimezie at the entrance of the building, reflecting the deep appreciation he holds for the highlife icon.
At that point, Davido performed a legwork popular with Bright Chimezie.
During an earlier video conversation, Davido credited Chimezie’s classic track Because of English as the inspiration behind With You.
Furthermore, he expressed heartfelt gratitude for the singer’s enduring musical legacy.
Visibly moved by the gesture by Davido, Bright Chimezie praised the new song, describing it as “a beautiful piece of work”.
The moment also included virtual appearances from members of Davido’s family. His uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, and wife Chioma joined via video call to honour Chimezie and commend his contribution to Nigerian music.
While Because of English was released in 1984, With You, was released in 2025 and the song has walked its way into the hearts of many, serenading the airwaves.
While Bright Chimezie’s song shares a story of situations in the classroom where people are punished for not having good command of English Language in Nigeria with diverse languages.
He highlights that Nigerian languages are dyeing as a result of high preference of the English language.
But Davido’s song pours love on an imaginary feminine figure.
Would there be a remix of With You with Bright Chimezie, or a collaboration originating from this meeting? Fingers are crossed.
