COVID-19: 7 dies as Kano overtakes Lagos on daily cases, tolls nears 2000

Kano State on Thursday overtook Lagos on daily Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, hitting a total of 80 cases in a day, while Lagos recorded 45 cases.

This is coming even as seven persons in the country died of the virus, bringing the total death to 58.

With this development, Kano is now the second state with the highest number of COVID-19 infections in the country with a total of 219, followed by Federal Capital Territory, with 178.

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, 204 new cases of COVID-19 reported; 80-Kano, 45-Lagos, 12-Gombe, 9-Bauchi, 9-Sokoto and 7-Borno.

Others include 7-Edo, 6-Rivers, 6-Ogun, 4-FCT, 4-Akwa Ibom, 4-Bayelsa, 3-Kaduna, 2-Oyo,
2-Delta, 2-Nasarawa, 1-Ondo and 1-Kebbi.

“As at 11:50pm 30th April- 1932 confirmed cases of #COVID19 in Nigeria, Discharged: 319, Deaths: 58,” NCDC said in a tweet.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, during a briefing said that daily laboratory testing capacity for COVID-19 had been increased to 2,500 in the 15 molecular diagnosis laboratories across the country.

“Active community transmission is illustrated by the increasing number of confirmed persons who have COVID-19.

“This is a major challenge and necessitates a call on all citizens to take COVID-19 infection seriously, and take ownership of their health, and strictly adhere to public health advisories.

“Federal Ministry of Health has brought in manpower capacity from the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) to strengthen and integrate risk communication with the planned training for primary healthcare workers.

“This ensures that health services remain accessible at the primary healthcare facilities, while ensuring that our citizens and health workers are safe.”

He said that NPHCDA would anchor community engagement and mobilisation for COVID-19, awareness and test demand creation.
