A magistrate court in Kano State has handed a 12‑month custodial sentence to well‑known TikTok content creator Abubakar Usman Kilina after finding him guilty of “promoting indecent behaviour” in a viral skit.
Presiding over Magistrate Court No. 21, Magistrate Hadiza Muhammad Hassan ruled that Kilina’s video featured cross‑dressers and explicit language.
Also, it violated the moral standards outlined in the Kano State Film Censorship Board regulations and the state’s penal code.
Although, the court offered an option of bail, Kilina must pay ₦100,000 in fines.
Also, ₦30,000 in compensation to the Kano Stat e-Film Censorship Board
Respect Public Decency
In delivering judgment, Magistrate Hadiza issued a stern warning: “If Usman Kilina re‑offends, the court will revoke any option of a fine and require him to serve the full prison term”.
Also, she emphasised that social‑media influencers in the state must “respect public decency” or face legal consequences.
The case was filed by the Kano State Film Censorship Board.
The board is a regulatory body charged with vetting film and online content to align with local moral and cultural sensibilities.
Freedom Radio reported that Kilina’s sketch drew the Board’s attention because it included cross‑dressing performers.
This is an element officials deemed “contrary to public morals” alongside profane language.
