Carlo Ancelotti will officially become the head coach of Brazil’s national team on May 26, after completing the season with Real Madrid.
The 65-year-old Italian will make history as Brazil’s first full-time foreign head coach. He is set to lead the team in their World Cup qualifiers next month against Paraguay and Ecuador.
In a statement, the Brazilian Football Association (CBF) described the appointment as a “landmark moment” and praised the union of “two icons” — referring to Brazil’s five World Cup titles and Ancelotti’s legendary coaching career.
Although this will be his first time coaching a national team, Ancelotti is one of the most successful managers in club football. He is the only coach to have won league titles in all of Europe’s top five leagues.
Brazil have struggled with stability in recent years, searching for their fifth head coach in just two-and-a-half years following Dorival Junior’s dismissal in March.
Ancelotti returned to Real Madrid in 2021 and led the club to a pair of La Liga and Champions League doubles.
However, after losing Sunday’s El Clasico to Barcelona, Madrid are set to end the season without a trophy.
He will leave the Bernabeu after their final La Liga match against Real Sociedad.
