Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, Burna Boy, has taken a swipe at South Africans following the victory of a white model, Mia Le Roux, in the Miss South Africa 2024 pageant.
Le Roux, a descendant of Dutch settlers in South Africa (the Boers) and who is deaf, was crowned Miss South Africa 2024 on Saturday night.
Furthermore, she triumphs over nine other predominantly black contestants.
The controversy leading up to this event saw Chidimma Vanessa Onwe Adetshina, a model of Nigerian and Mozambican descent, forced to withdraw from the competition.
Adetshina faced intense bullying from predominantly black South Africans who argued that her heritage disqualified her from representing South Africa effectively.
In light of this, Burna Boy reacted by sharing a photo of the newly crowned Miss South Africa on his X account.
He captioned it with, “So after all that… [laugh emoji]”.
His comment subtly mocked the black South Africans who had vehemently opposed Adetshina’s participation, only to see a white model win the crown.
The irony of the situation has sparked discussions among Nigerians and other Africans, who have also criticised the outcome.
