Video: Three petrol tankers explode on Lagos/Ibadan Expressway

Three articulated tankers loaded with Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, also known as petrol, on Sunday crashed towards each other on Sunday along Lagos/Ibadan Expressway, causing a serious inferno.

The incident which occurred at about 2.18am, on Kara Bridge, inward Lagos, when an articulated truck laden with 33,000litres of petrol crashed Into another articulated truck travelling on the same axis.

The impact of the crash was said to have resulted in the inferno which lasted for hours as one of the articulated trucks discharged its content which spreads into the neighbourhood and sparked.

No life was lost due to the incident but the three articulated trucks were consumed by the inferno.

As at 2.30am, the recovery operation was still ongoing just as the Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency LASEMA, Dr. Oluwafemi Oke-Osanyintolu who confirmed the incident said the Agency was on top of the situation.

He said the situation will be well managed to avoid traffic gridlock on the expressway.

Meanwhile, there is currently serious traffic around that axis, as motorists are looking for an alternative route to navigate.

FRSC Sector Commander, Lagos State Command, Olusegun Ogungbemide, advised motorists to seek alternative routes.

“The FRSC is admonishing motorists who have reasons to use the road should seek an alternative, for now, to allow the personnel of Fire Service on the ground to extinguish the fire.

“Alternative routes recommended for those moving out of Lagos this morning can use the Victoria Island by Ajah to Ijebu Ode to continue their journey.

“The Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway to the Sagamu Interchange is another alternative that motorists can use at the moment,” he said in a statement.
