Breaking: Can APC survive Edo election?

Breaking: Court stops Gov. Obaseki from arresting OshiomholeThe rift between the former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and the governor of Edo state, Godwin Obaseki has undoubtedly caused havoc and political hypertension to APC members, the moment Obaseki resigned his membership from the party.

No need of asking if he would move along with his supporters, as his deputy Philip Shaibu, was seen in a trending video removing the flag of the party from his office, indicating his resignation also.

However, having been struck by that heavy loss, APC was hours later struck by another heavy political missile, the sack of Adams Oshiomhole as the National Chairman of the party by an appeal court.

The party no doubt is currently shaking and quaking politically as the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and other mushroom parties are getting battle ready for the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Edo state.

The question is, how prepared is APC in the election? The party has divided internally especially with the resignation of the governor.

Moreover, the party is battling with a constitutional crisis with regards to who suppose to assume as the new acting National Chairman of the party.

Section 14(2) of the APC Constitution (2014 as amended) stipulates the duties of a Deputy National Chairman of the party among which is to assist the National Chairman in the discharge of his duties.

In Section 14(2)(iii), the constitution states that “the Deputy National Chairman shall act as the National Chairman in the absence of the National Chairman from his zone”. The APC has two Deputy National Chairmen, one for the North and the other from the South. While Sen. Lawal Shaibu holds sway for the North, Sen. Abiola Ajimobi is in charge of the South.

The National Working Committee NWC of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC has named Sen. Abiola Ajimobi as its acting National Chairman.

By implication, Ajimobi is supposed to now act as the National Chairman of the party, being from the same zone with Oshiomhole, but with reports that he is currently hospitalised, who then acts in his stead?

Can the acting National Secretary also assume the role of an acting National Chairman when by hierarchy, the Deputy National Chairman, North, is ahead of him?

Can he preside over a meeting with the Deputy National Chairman, North, in attendance? Or, can the Deputy National Chairman, North, act as National Chairman when he is not from the same zone with the suspended National Chairman?.

Just like we asked earlier, Can APC survive this coming election following what has bedeviled the party recently?
