Benue Youths Protest As Herdsmen Kill Three

Three people were reportedly killed by suspected armed herders who invaded Agan Community in Makurdi Local Government Area, Benue State.

The killing sparked a spontaneous protest by some youths in the community, who attempted to burn the house of the lawmaker representing the area at the state assembly, Alfred Berger.

According to a resident of the community who simply identified himself as Terna, the attackers stormed the area around 6:00pm on Thursday and shot indiscriminately, leading to the death of three people.

Confirming the attack, Berger, who spoke to journalists on Friday, said youths in the area brought the corpses, dumped them at his house, and attempted to torch the building.

The spokesperson for the State Police Command, Catherine Anene, in a statement on Friday, confirmed the attempt by the youths to burn the lawmaker’s house.

She said policemen from the command responded swiftly to the distress call and chased the attackers.

The spokesperson said: “On 29/05/2025 at about 1800hrs, information was received about an attack at Tse Orjime, Mbalagh council ward, Makurdi.

“Police teams within the area responded “immediately and started chasing the attackers into the bush.

“Simultaneously, youths of the area mobilised themselves and attempted to burn down Hon. Alfred Berger’s house; a State House of Assembly member representing the area.

“Furthermore, they were resisted by the police.

“At the end of the operation, three corpses, earlier shot by the attackers, were recovered and taken to General Hospital, Northbank, while investigation is ongoing”.
