Teenager Lamine Yamal was the star as Barcelona defeated Benfica to move into the Champions League quarter-finals. The 17-year-old talent set up Raphinha’s first goal with a brilliant assist and later scored a stunning goal himself.
This gave Barcelona a 2-1 lead on the night and a 3-1 win on aggregate.
Otamendi’s Goal Gives Benfica Hope
Nicolas Otamendi briefly gave Benfica hope by scoring a great header to cancel out Raphinha’s opening goal. However, Yamal’s skill ended Benfica’s chances, and Raphinha sealed the victory with a powerful shot into the bottom corner.
VAR Confirms Raphinha’s Second Goal
There was some confusion over Raphinha’s second goal, as the referee seemed to stop play for a foul by Otamendi. After checking VAR, the goal was allowed, and Otamendi’s yellow card was cancelled.
Yamal and Raphinha Shine
While Yamal’s performance was outstanding, Raphinha also stood out with his two goals. He has now been involved in 16 goals in the Champions League this season, a record only Lionel Messi has beaten for Barcelona in one season.
Barcelona Could Have Scored More
Raphinha’s season tally now stands at 11 goals and five assists. Barcelona had chances to win by a bigger margin, but Frenkie de Jong missed a clear opportunity to score a fourth goal.
With this win, Barcelona moves into the quarter-finals and will face either Borussia Dortmund or Lille.
