In a heartfelt statement released on Tuesday, Benjamin Kalu expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives.

He extended his condolences to the bereaved families and the government of Benue State.

Also, he stressed the urgency of coordinated security action, urging relevant agencies to act decisively.

“I join Mr. President in calling on security agencies to act swiftly and decisively. The recent incident in Yelewata is deeply disheartening. The barbaric killing of innocent citizens is utterly unacceptable,” he said.

Kalu reassured Nigerians that the National Assembly remains committed to supporting peace-building efforts across the country, especially in volatile regions like the Middle Belt.

He revealed that the House Committee on Constitution Review, which he chairs, had just held a national dialogue focusing on reforming Nigeria’s security architecture.

According to him, ongoing constitutional amendments aim to improve inter-agency collaboration, boost intelligence sharing and strengthen border control

He emphasised that these reforms are critical to closing existing gaps in the country’s security framework and ensuring sustainable peace.

The Deputy Speaker also prayed for the repose of the victims’ souls and urged all stakeholders to remain committed to finding lasting solutions to the root causes of violence in Benue and other affected areas.
