The 2024 Ballon d’Or award ceremony will introduce a historic shift as organisers announced on Monday that male and female players will receive an equal number of honours for the first time in the event’s history.

Set to take place on Monday, September 22, 2025, at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, the ceremony will be co-organised by France Football magazine and UEFA.

This year’s edition will feature new categories, including Best Women’s Goalkeeper, Best Young Women’s Player, and Top Women’s Scorer in club or international competitions.

With these additions, both male and female footballers will now compete for six awards each. The ceremony will also continue to include the Socrates Award, which celebrates humanitarian contributions by players of any gender.

Nominees across all categories will be announced in early August.

The 2023 ceremony was overshadowed by controversy when Real Madrid boycotted the event after Vinicius Junior missed out on the Best Men’s Player award, which went to Manchester City’s Rodri.

Organisers hope the 2024 edition will be more inclusive and reflective of football’s growing global diversity.
