Amorim ‘Proud’ Of Dorgu For Humble Penalty Admission

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim praised Patrick Dorgu for urging the referee to overturn a penalty he had been awarded against Real Sociedad.

Dorgu was felled by Aritz Elustondo for the second penalty United were awarded in their 4-1 win over Real Sociedad.

The Danish wing-back looked to have won another spot-kick when Hamara Traore challenged him in the box.

However, he went towards the referee and gestured with his hands to make it clear that Traore had won the ball and that it was not a penalty. The decision was promptly overturned.

Amorim told a press conference: “It depends, it is the right thing to do so I am quite proud of him but I cannot say if it is 0-0 or losing I would have the same response.”

Dorgu had a shambolic last appearance at Old Trafford against Ipswich, gifting a goal and then getting sent off.

But he was one of the top performers in the last-16 second leg against Real Sociedad, flying up and down the left flank.

As well as earning United’s second penalty, his surging run forward led to Jon Aramburu bringing him down and getting sent off.

Amorim added: “He did well, he had a great performance He is learning a lot in that position. He has the physicality.”

Real Sociedad coach Imanol Alguacil was not pleased with the performance of Dutch referee Benoit Bastien, who gave United two penalties as well as the red card.

Bastien also awarded a spot-kick to the visitors for Matthijs de Ligt’s challenge on Mikel Oyarzabal, but only after being told to review the play on the pitch-side monitor.

“We would have liked to have had a neutral referee,” he said.

“We did not deserve a refereeing display like this, neither did this tie, neither did this stadium.”

The Red Devils, who are the only unbeaten team in the Europa League, can now look forward to a quarter-final tie against Lyon, who destroyed FCSB 4-0 on Thursday to make it 7-1 on aggregate in their last-16 tie.

United are next in action in the Premier League on Sunday away to struggling Leicester City.
