Alvarez impressed over the two legs between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid in their Champions League round of 16 tie.

However, as the Rojiblancos took their city rivals to a penalty shootout, it was the Argentine who saw his penalty ruled out by referee Szymon Marciniak as he was ruled to have touched the ball twice during his kick.

While Jan Oblak saved Lucas Vazquez’s penalty, Marcos Llorente missed his spot-kick which set Real Madrid on their way to a win in the penalty shootout.

However, it was Alvarez’s controversial penalty that stole the headlines, and the former Manchester City star was left ‘incredulous’ by the decision in the dressing room, as per ESPN.

After his goal was ruled out, Alvarez reportedly claimed he was ‘unsure’ whether he had touched the ball twice.

According to Marca, Alvarez told his team-mates in the dressing room: “I didn’t feel like I touched the ball” twice.”
