Again! Its Obaseki against Pastor Ize-Iyamu again, as Edo decides September 19

Governor Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki of Edo has emerged the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and would fly the party’s flag in the September 19 governorship election.

Following Obaseki’s victory, it becomes a repeated battle of 2016 gubernatorial election, between Obaseki and, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu but this time both individuals switched party.

While the former is now in PDP, the latter is the official candidate of the All Progressive Party.

Obaseki emerged candidate after two other aspirants, Mr Omeregie Ogbeide-Ihama representing the Oredo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives and Mr Ken Imasuangbon finally stepped down from the race.

iBrandTV gathered that one of the aspirants, Mr Gideon Ikhine, had on Monday stepped down for the governor.

Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, who was the Chairman of the Governorship Primary Committee, said that voting still took place in line with the party’s constitution, the Electoral Act as well as acceptable democratic practices.

Mohammed said that Obaseki polled 1,952 while 72 votes were declared invalid from the 2,020 total vote cast.

He said that the total delegates were 3,234.

The result was declared by the chairman of the committee after it was confirmed by Independent National Electoral Commission officials as well as security agencies.

Obaseki, a Nigerian politician and businessman, currently serving as the Executive Governor of Edo State was born on the first day of July, 1957 in Benin City, Nigeria.

He became the governor on 12 November 2016, as it was the day he was sworn in following the electoral practice.

Before now, he served under the former Governor Adams Oshiomole in March 2009 as the Chairman of the Edo State Economic and Strategy Team inaugurated by the then governor, who is currently serving a suspension from the party’s activities by the Appeal Court.

Obaseki holds post-graduate degrees in both Finance and International Business, and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Stock Brokers, Nigeria.

Obaseki served as an executive board member of several private companies including Afrinvest. He is the recipient of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) award for best performing Governor of the year in October 2019.

His his counterpart, Osagie Ize-Iyamu was born on the 21st of June 21, 1962, is a Nigerian Pastor, and also the former Chief of Staff and Secretary to the Edo state government.

Ize-Iyamu was the gubernatorial candidate of the Edo state People’s Democratic Party for the 2016 Edo state gubernatorial election, where he lost to the incumbent governor, Obaseki.

Following the stance of things along with is quest for power, which according was born out of his passion to liberate the Edo people, he decamped From the PDP and joined the APC party.

Thereafter, he purchased a ticket under the APC to contest for the 2020 gubernatorial election in the state. He joined other candidates of the party, and later emerged winner of the party’s primary.

He was the National vice-chairman, South-South Zone of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

Ize-Iyamu also served as the Director-General of Adams Oshiomhole’s 2nd term Campaign Organisation. He was also the Coordinator of Goodluck/Sambo Campaign Organisation.

Recently, he was honoured by the Benson Idahosa University with an honorary doctorate degree in Public Administration.
