24 hours after easing lockdown, Nigeria records highest single day cases at 245

Less than 24 hours after the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Ogun and Lagos State, effected President Muhamadu Buhari mandate on easing the lockdown, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, has confirmed 245 new COVID-19 cases in the country.

This is the highest single-day figure the nation has recorded since the virus entered into the country by an Italian national in February 2020.

With this development, the total number of persons infected by the pandemic in Nigeria is now 2,802,

The NCDC also said that six new patients have been confirmed dead from the virus in the country, bringing the total number of deaths to 93.

According to NCDC, “On the 4th of May 2020, 245 new confirmed cases and six deaths were recorded in Nigeria. No new state has reported a case in the last 24 hours.

“Till date, 2802 cases have been confirmed, 417 cases have been discharged and 93 deaths have been recorded in 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory

“The 170 new cases are reported from 12 states- Lagos(76), Kano(23), Bauchi(9), FCT (19), Katsina(37), Borno(18), Adamawa(6), Oyo(5), Jigawa (32), Ogun (5), Ekiti (1), Osun (1), Benue (1), Niger (1), Zamfara (1) Edo (10)” NCDC added.

Of the 970 tested carried out by the NCDC, 245 turns positive. In total, 2,802 positive out of 18,536 tests carried out.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, on Monday, said that about 4,000 Nigerians are eager to come back home even as the government are confronted with several challenges.

Speaking during the daily briefing on COVID-19, Onyeama said that one of their biggest constraints was quarantine capacity.

“There are almost 4,000 Nigerians wishing to come back home. There are various constraints on us, the biggest one is quarantine capacity (in hotels) for when they arrive. So we will have to do it in batches.

“Evacuation flights for Nigerians will commence Wednesday this week—an Emirates flight from Dubai to Lagos. Will be followed by a BA flight on Friday, London to Lagos. All will be mandatorily quarantined in hotels and monitored for 14 days.”
