The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command announced on Monday that it has detained Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, a lawmaker, for allegedly assaulting a cab driver in Abuja.
According to Josephine Adeh, the spokesperson for the Abuja Police Command, Ikwechegh was taken into custody and is currently undergoing questioning at the Maitama Police Station.
The incident was initially reported to the police by the cab driver, Stephen Abuwatseya.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Abuwatseya was in the process of delivering a package to Hon. Ikwechegh when a dispute arose over the method of delivery.
Also, this dispute escalated, resulting in the lawmaker slapping the driver.
The FCT Police Command noted in its statement that Ikwechegh displayed a dismissive attitude toward law enforcement.
“You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police.”
Also, this comment, according to the police, reflects a concerning disregard for the authority of law enforcement.
However, Commissioner of Police for the FCT, Olatunji Disu, has directed a thorough investigation into the incident.
“The Command is committed to conducting an impartial investigation and ensuring justice in all cases,” the statement added.
