An officer of the Nigeria Police Force was confirmed dead on Saturday after gunmen invaded a Permanent Voter Card (PVC) collection centre in Imo state.

Reports that emerged on Sunday morning revealed that the assailants stormed the centre when residents were queueing up for their card collection ahead of the 2023 general elections.

An official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Chienyere Chijioke-Osuji, told The Nation that the incident occurred in the Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area of the state.

The event was said to have caused tension in the area as residents reportedly fled for safety.

Chijioke-Osuji confirmed the attack saying some people sustained injuries in the attack while a police officer was shot dead.

“It happened at Ahiazu Mbaise today. A policeman was gunned down, not an INEC staff member. No corps member was wounded, though my AEO Ops, Barrister Kingsley Ohiri, and the CLO of the LG dislocated their leg and arm while jumping over the fence,” the news platform quoted Chijioke-Osuji saying.

She added: “Please reach out to Barrister Ohiri. Glory be to God for saving our lives. It’s really unfortunate we lost the chief security officer to the LGA.”

However, as at the time of filing this report, the State Police Command, however, has not issued an official statement on the incident yet as of reporting time.
