A High Court sitting in Ilorin has sentenced five persons to death by hanging over the rape and murder of a 300 level student of the University of Ilorin, Olajide Blessing Omowumi.

Justice Yusuf Adebayo also declared three persons innocent amongst the eight suspects standing on trial for the offense of rape and murder of the deceased student.
The judge, while passing judgement on Tuesday, discharge and acquit Abdullateef Abdulrahman, Daud Bashir Aderayo and Akande Taiye Oladoja, stating that they were not found guilty of any of the charges against them.
According to the police, the elder sister of the deceased found her naked dead body with her hands and mouth tied inside the house when she came back from work on the faithful day of the incident. Condemning the atrocious act, the governor of the state, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq tweeted: ”This kind of anti social and bad behavior is not acceptable to the people of good conscience.” “All of us must unite and fight this to logical conclusion,” he added.

The police added that the people who carried out the act left a letter at the scene of the incident which read.. “Unilorin do not forgive.” Meanwhile, the aunty of the deceased Omolara Kuteyi told newsmen that during the trial “the family was shock that the people who committed the act were known faces.” Mrs Kuteyi explained that the suspect were caught through the deceased phone that was sold to one of the suspects. “They went with her phone after she was killed. It was the phone they use to trace them back,” she said.
