The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has reached an agreement with the Federal Government, and agreed to call off its eight-month long strike.

Following its meeting with the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, in Abuja, on Friday, both parties arrived at a consensus.

The government also pledged to pay N40bn as the Earned Allowance and N30bn for the revitalisation of the university system bringing the total payment to N70bn.

Salary arrears were also discussed, and the government agreed to pay them before December 31.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Ngige noted that the parley was fruitful, adding that the government made a proposal to ASUU which it would take back to its members.

The union’s leadership is supposed to communicate the developmement to members and decide on a date to call off the strike.
