Leicester City has parted ways with manager Steve Cooper, following a dismal start to the season.
With 12 games played, the Foxes find themselves in 16th position in the Premier League.
The final nail in Cooper’s coffin came after Leicester’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday, November 23, 2024. This loss left the team just two points above the relegation zone.
Ironically, Chelsea is now managed by Enzo Maresca, who previously led Leicester to the 2023-24 Championship title and promotion back into the Premier League.
Steve Cooper took over the reins at Leicester in the summer, succeeding Maresca. Prior to his appointment, Cooper had managed Nottingham Forest, guiding them to promotion in 2022 and keeping them afloat in the top flight the following season.
In the wake of Cooper’s departure, Leicester City has announced that first-team coach Ben Dawson will oversee men’s first-team training.
Dawson will be supported by coaches Danny Alcock and Andy Hughes. The club is now embarking on the process of appointing a new manager, with the aim of concluding the search as soon as possible.
Assistant manager Alan Tate and first-team coach and analyst Steve Rands have also left the club.
The defeat to Chelsea marked Leicester’s sixth loss in the top flight this season. Cooper had expressed frustration with referee Andrew Madley’s performance in the game.
Cooper’s sacking makes him the second Premier League manager to lose his job this season, following Erik ten Hag’s departure from Manchester United in October.
Cooper’s managerial career has included stints at Nottingham Forest, Swansea, and a successful spell as the manager of England’s Under-17s, whom he guided to victory at the 2017 World Cup.
