Nigeria’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) in Abuja have officially received re-certification from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), marking a significant achievement for the country’s aviation sector.

During the certificate presentation ceremony to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), acting Director-General of the NCAA, Chris Najomo, stated that the country’s aerodrome certificates had remained inactive since 2020.

He called the re-certification a crucial step in enhancing Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure, which had long been overdue.

“This is not just a formality”, Najomo said. “It’s an essential process to ensure our airports meet international standards for safety and efficiency”.

The re-certification, based on the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, required thorough assessments of airport facilities, including runways and airfield lighting.

Najomo highlighted the importance of the primary runways at Lagos’ MMIA and the ongoing work on taxiways A, B, and C.

He also emphasised the need to focus on Abuja’s primary runway to ensure it meets ICAO standards.

While celebrating the achievement, Najomo acknowledged the ongoing work.

He pointed out that further improvements to some runways and airfield lighting systems are necessary.

He assured that the authorities would allocate the necessary resources to address these challenges.

Finally, Najomo expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo for their leadership, which played a vital role in achieving this milestone for Nigerian aviation.
