Award-winning Nigerian singer, Niniola, has explained her decision to remain an independent artiste, rejecting offers from record labels throughout her decade-long career.
In a recent interview, the Maradona hitmaker highlighted her focus on the business side of music and her desire for creative control as key reasons for staying independent.
“I have been an independent artiste for 10 years. There are pros and cons to signing with a record label. ”
“I have seen the business side of music, which a lot of people overlook as they focus solely on making music,” she said.
Niniola noted that remaining independent allows her to maintain her unique style and control over her artistry.
“A label wanted to sign me after my debut single, but I was sceptical because I didn’t want anyone to change my style. At that time, nobody was doing Afro-house.
Record labels can dictate your direction because they are the ones financing you,” she added.
She further emphasised, “For me, creative freedom is one of the major advantages of being an independent artiste.”
Niniola also shared a personal insight, revealing that while she is naturally introverted, music brings out the extrovert in her.
Her journey as an independent artiste has continued to inspire many, solidifying her place as a trailblazer in the Afro-house genre.
