If you are a young student in Kwara State, you may need to brace up for a compulsory agricultural science course in the primary and secondary schools.
You see, a Kwara State lawmaker is advocating for Agricultural Science to become a mandatory subject in schools.
The lawmaker does not only want that course added to the curriculum, but he aims to equip students with practical skills and career opportunities in farming.
In Kwara State, Hon. Ganiyu Salau wants to bring agriculture back into the spotlight.
The lawmaker recently proposed making Agricultural Science a mandatory subject for all primary and secondary schools in the state.
His aim is clear: To equip students with practical skills and knowledge about a key sector in Nigeria’s economy.
Salau believes that teaching the basics of farming will help students become more self-sufficient and adopt healthier lifestyles.
Also, he believes that learning how farmers produce food can foster respect for farming and encourage better eating habits.

Moreover, he sees agricultural education as a way to spark entrepreneurship by opening doors to careers in agro-business, which has significant potential for job creation.
However, Salau worries that schools have sidelined agricultural studies in recent years, offering it as an optional subject rather than a core one.
He argues that this shift limits students’ opportunities to explore the vast potential of agriculture, which he considers crucial for Kwara’s economic growth and stability.
Salau, who represents the Omupo constituency, linked the lack of agricultural education to rising unemployment.
Therefore, He urged schools to prepare more young people for careers in farming to help address the issue.
