The Nigerian National Bureau of Statistics on Monday disclosed that 82.9 million Nigerians or 40.1 of the nation’s populace still lives in abject poverty.
The 2019 Poverty and Inequality index report was released by Dr. Yemi Kale, Statistician-General of The Federation/ CEO Nigerian National Bureau of Statistics.
According to the report, “In Nigeria 40.1 per cent of total population were classified as poor. In other words, on average 4 out of 10 individuals in Nigeria has real per capita expenditures below N137,430 per year.

“This translates to over 82.9 million Nigerians who are considered poor by national standards.
“Lagos state had the least poverty rate at 4.5 per cent while Sokoto had the highest at 87.7 per cent. Ebonyi is the poorest ranked Southern Nigerian state at 79.8 percent. In the South East, the least poorest state is Anambra at 14.8 per cent.
The poverty rate of the nation’s capital, FCT stands at 38.7 per cent.
