Purging also called diarrhoea can leave you feeling weak, tired, and uncomfortable. It happens when your body is trying to quickly remove something harmful from your system.
During this time, what you eat can either make you feel better or make things worse.
Eating the wrong food when you are purging can irritate your stomach, increase the number of times you go to the toilet, and stop your body from healing fast.
That’s why it’s important to know which foods to avoid until your stomach is calm again. Here are 3 things you should not eat when you are purging:
1. Greasy or Fried Foods
Foods like fried plantain, chips, meat pies, puff-puff, or oily stew may taste good, but they are hard on the stomach.
They can slow down digestion and cause more discomfort when you’re already purging.
Why to avoid:
Greasy foods can make your stool more loose and cause bloating, cramps, or stomach pain.
2. Spicy Foods
Pepper soup, hot suya, or anything with too much pepper can make the situation worse. Your stomach is already sensitive, and adding spicy food may increase the burning feeling in your tummy.
Why to avoid:
Spicy foods can irritate your stomach lining and make purging continue longer than it should.
3. Milk and Dairy Products
Milk, cheese, ice cream, or yoghurt may seem harmless, but during purging, they can cause trouble. Many people find it hard to digest dairy when they’re sick.
Why to avoid:
Dairy can make your stool more watery and cause gas or stomach pain.
What to Eat Instead:
Plain white rice
Boiled yam or potatoes
Toasted bread or crackers
Pap (akamu) without milk
Lots of clean water or oral rehydration solution (ORS)
