Sanwo-Olu Commissions Eyo Monument To Strengthen Lagos’ Cultural Tourism

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has unveiled the iconic Eyo Monument at the John Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History in Onikan, Lagos Island.

This is as part of efforts to promote cultural heritage and boost tourism in the state.

The commissioning, which took place on Friday, comes ahead of the Eyo Festival scheduled for Saturday, December 27, 2025.

Lagos State Government earlier issued a travel advisory announcing traffic restrictions across Lagos Island.

Speaking at the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the Eyo monument as a powerful representation of Lagos’ identity and history,

He noted that its location within the John Randle Centre makes it a fitting landmark for preserving and showcasing Yoruba culture, art and traditions.

According to the state government, the nearly 40-foot-high monument is expected to serve both educational and tourism purposes, while contributing significantly to Lagos’ economic and cultural development.

The governor said the Eyo, as a cultural symbol, tells the story of Lagos to the world and will provide visitors with a unique space to learn, take photographs and engage with the state’s rich history.

Sanwo-Olu added that the installation of the monument reinforces Lagos’ commitment to protecting its cultural assets

Also, it positioned the state as a global destination for arts and heritage tourism.

He also commended the curator of the monument, Dotun Popoola, describing the structure as a reflection of Nigerian creativity and excellence.

The governor further highlighted the offerings of the John Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History.

This includes exhibition halls, an amphitheatre, a village square, a gift shop and other creative spaces designed to immerse visitors in Yoruba culture.
