Nigerian singer Shola Allyson has finally addressed the long-standing criticism surrounding her decision not to directly mention the name of Jesus in her songs.

The revered vocalist came under heavy social media backlash in March 2025 for what critics described as her refusal to explicitly reference Jesus in her music.

At the time, Shola Allyson reacted to the backlash via a post on X, where she dismissed the criticism

Also, she insisted she would not be pressured into conforming.

She wrote that no one could bully her into joining what she described as “darkness that looks like light,”

Speaking further during a recent interview on Oyinmomo TV on Saturday, the Eji Owuro crooner finally gave a clearer explanation for her stance.

According to her, Jesus never instructed her to promote His name through music.

She stresses that her art is rooted in personal spirituality rather than religious branding.

I’m not a religious singer. I have never introduced myself as a gospel singer. My name is Shola Allyson, and I am simply a singer,” she explained.

When the interviewer pointed out that many people complain about her not mentioning Jesus’ name in her songs.

she responded firmly: “Jesus did not instruct us to mention His name in songs, nor did He ask us to do PR for Him.”
