International rapper Nicki Minaj has revealed that her first name, Onika, has Igbo origins.
He confirms that it is the Trinidadian variation of the Igbo name Onyekachi.

The revelation came after a fan praised her recent speech at the United Nations, where she condemned jihadist attacks on Christians in Nigeria.
The fan suggested that Minaj’s name, interpreted as “Who is greater than God?”
It was a sign that she was destined for great things, including speaking up against injustice.
The fan shared a graphic detailing the meaning of the name Onika and its cultural variations, writing:
“The name Onika means ‘continued belief in a supreme being who holds ultimate authority and surpasses all others in greatness.’ Let my Nigerian Barbz confirm how God destines someone for greatness before they are even born!”
Responding to the post on X, Nicki Minaj confirmed the Igbo connection and added a playful twist:
“Will it get even more mysterious if I told you the tattoo on my arm means ‘God is with me’ in Chinese?”

Her response has since sparked excitement among Nigerian fans, especially the Barbz community, who celebrated her acknowledgment of her name’s Igbo roots.
