Germany has pledged €21 million to support Nigeria’s transition to renewable energy, marking a deepening partnership between the two nations.

This funding will strengthen clean energy development, improve energy efficiency, and actively encourage private sector participation across the country.
Germany Pledges Funding To Boost Clean Energy
The Working Group on Power, Energy, and Climate meeting in Germany on November 3, 2025 provided the platform for this announcement.
There, both countries signed a Joint Declaration of Intent, formalising technical cooperation and energy transition dialogue and creating a clear roadmap for long-term collaboration.
Partnership In Action
Under the new arrangement, Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) will contribute €9 million to the Nigeria Energy Support Programme (NESP), which expands renewable energy access, promotes efficiency, and drives power sector reforms.

In addition, BMZ will provide €12 million to the newly launched Energy Transition Challenge Fund (ETCF) to back innovative projects and co-finance ventures that advance decarbonisation.
Driving Local Impact
Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu described the funding as a “major step towards building a sustainable and secure energy system” while emphasising that financial mechanisms such as the Green Line of Credit for SMEs and GET.invest will mobilise private investment.
Moreover, the new funds will expand off-grid and mini-grid solutions, stimulate local entrepreneurship, and strengthen Nigeria’s climate-resilient energy capacity.
Both countries also committed to delivering tangible socio-economic benefits and proposed institutionalising NGEP meetings from 2026 to improve coordination and accountability.
Overall, this collaboration demonstrates how international support and private sector engagement can transform Nigeria’s energy landscape.
